Homeschool Journal Dot Net

We’re home

but we leave tomorrow morning for Montana, so I’m very short of time.
Boy did well at Nationals, but not enough to get additional scholarship money.  He’s happy because he made it to the second day and he had fun.
So much other junk, but it’s 11:30 and I still need to pack.
I’ll leave with just a note that I’m doing a book review post (or actually I’ve asked Girl to do it).  She gets $20 for Amazon for reading the book and telling you what she thought about it.  I’m not going to do this often, but I thought it might be fun to try one.
Watch for it!!

I’ve Been Tagged!

Thanks to my friend Mandi at Under His Construction. How exciting is this?! I am very new at blogging and I’m tagged! Fantastic! A great way to get to know others and for others to get to know me.
So here is how it goes (the rules):
1. All right, here are the rules.
2. We have to post these rules before we give you the facts.
3. Players start with eight random facts/habits about themselves.
4. People who are tagged need to write their own blog about their eight
things and post these rules.
5. At the end of your blog, you need to choose eight people to get tagged
and list their names. Don’t forget to leave them a comment telling them they’re
tagged, and to read your blog.
Here I go!
1. I’m a California girl (born there not currently living there).
2. I am a book addict, I love to buy […]

Encouragement As We Begin Another Year

This post is dedicated to all the families who have chosen the straight and narrow path of following their God given rights and responsibilities to educate their children at home.
As I keep myself reminded of my calling, I encourage myself by reminding myself that God has called me to this task and because He called me, He has anointed me. He who calls is faithful to give us all we need! Isn’t that awesome! He calls us to a task, but before we realize the call or surrender to it, He has already set in place everything we need. When we step forward and say yes! He is there with His hands open wide saying, “Take eat, enjoy! Walk this path of provision I have for you.” I am amazed, not surprised, that God has thought of everything. When I look and […]

Blogging Tips Meme

Kev at The Bayer Family Blog tagged me for the Blogging Tips Meme, so here goes:
It’s very simple. When this is passed on to you, copy the whole thing, skim the list and put a * star beside those that you like. (Check out especially the * starred ones.)
Add the next number (1. 2. 3. 4. 5., etc.) and write your own blogging tip for other bloggers. Try to make your tip general.
After that, tag 10 other people. Link love some friends!
Just think- if 10 people start this, the 10 people pass it onto another 10 people, you have 100 links already!

Rough Notes on Evaluation and Planning for Writing

Being of the thoroughly eclectic persuasion, I am always seeking balance between following my intuition and using programs and curricula. In the same way, I am always trying to strike a balance between spontaneous, child-led, natural learning and my own agenda (which sometimes includes curricula). That’s why the tags for this post include both “unschooling” and “curricula” (as much as it may seem like an oxymoron to put the two together). It’s also why I don’t like giving myself the label of “unschooler.” I love the sound of it, but I don’t like to put myself into a niche. It’s all about balance. And being open to whatever works at the time.
Now, on to the point of this post. I recently invested in two Evaluation and Planning Guides from Bravewriter. The Arrow Evaluation & Planning Tool for Writing is for ages 8-12. The Slingshot Evaluation & Planning Tool for Writing is geared toward ages […]

A really exciting movie

We were watching an episode of Good Eats that we had recorded on our DVR. We got to a commercial break and as I started hitting the skip button Cameron said, “I hate this part! This is a really exciting movie!”

Meme.

First up, Icons.

The Rules of the Même:
1. Leave me a comment saying anything random, like the food you hate most in all the world. Something random. Whatever you like.
2. I respond by asking you five personal questions so I can get to know you better.
3. You will update your blog with the answers to the questions.
4. You will include this explanation and offer to ask someone else in the post.
5. When others comment asking to be asked, you will ask them five questions.
1. How much wood could, in your opinion, a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could, theoretically, chuck wood? (Be creative please)
However much wood the woodchuck decided to chuck.
2. What kind of a car do you want to have when you get your license, and for what reasons? (Offshoot: When do you intend to get you license?)
If I ever get a car… Maybe a hybrid. Good […]

I’m back!

Wow! Today is Tuesday. We left for vacation over a week ago and came back late on Saturday evening. I * am* worn* out! I spent Sunday parked on the couch vegetating with my favorite TV shows that I had taped. I could not have moved if you told me that the house was on fire. Yesterday I put the house to rights, got the laundry done and washed my shameful floors. I was not ready…… << whine >> I should have waited until, hmmm, maybe today or tomorrow. Should vacation wear you out that bad? I think not. But what would I have skipped. It was all fun and exciting. So I guess… nothing. But still. I will repeat…. I * am * worn * out!
Our trip to Sandbridge (just South of Virginia Beach) was easy and uneventful. The kids all played video games on all […]

Can I Do Random?

Mandi tagged me awhile ago but I’m just getting around to answering it.
1. All right, here are the rules.
Part of the reason I hesitated to do this is because of the rules. If I can’t do something right I usually skip it altogether or agonize until I lower my expectations. Yes, I realize this leads to ulcers but I am learning to relax. I am much better now. When I was a newly married nineteen year old, I would get so stressed that my husband would sit on me until I calmed down.
2. We have to post these rules before we give you the facts.
Now this I understand. Of course, you need rules to know what to do but I already messed up by giving facts in number one.
3. Players start with eight random facts/habits about themselves.
I struggle with random. I like to be purposeful. This doesn’t always work. Sometimes […]

First try with Pretzels

MilitaryKid loves pretzels. So I wasn’t too surprised when he asked for me to purchase the make-your-own pretzel package when we stopped at our Amish Grocery Store. I suggested though that MK make the pretzels and he agreed.
Once home he happily pulled out the bowls, gathered his supplies, turned on the oven, and read the directions. My chin was on the floor. Well, not really but I was shocked. MK still asks me to make his breakfast. And his lunch. And his snacks. Of course I make dinner, but this is a kid who really does not cook, too often. I was surprised. Pleasantly surprised. Actually I was so surprised that MK was into rolling out the dough before I pulled out the camera. Here he is starting the twist.

It was HIS idea to pull out his ruler. […]

1. If you were a flavor of tea, what flavor would you be?
I would be something sweet and mildly fruity, with a little fun…like bubble-gum flavoured tea!
2. Where was the best place you lived?
Wow, umm…that’s a toss up. I loved Calgary, for multiple reasons: The plains, the mountains, the big city. However, Harvey really was one of the most beautiful and calming places I’ve ever lived. […]

5 Minutes

Most of you already know that 5 Minutes for Mom does lots of good contests. This time, they’re giving away a 37″ flat panel tv from Best Buy. I almost didn’t enter, because my one holdout against having to save up for a Wii and its related gadgets and games is that we use a teeny 13″ tv that lives in our closet, and the Wii just wouldn’t be playable on that screen. So I know that if, in JediBoy’s wildest dreams, we do win the tv, I’m doomed to a life with the Wii! But it was too good to pass up.
You can also enter to win $300 in Horizon Organic dairy products. Or a Sesame Street DVD. Or a collection of stories about Quinceaneras. Did I mention they have lots of contests?

Repost from LWOS - What I Would Do Differently

I was talking to my friend Rebecca about beginning the home schooling journey. I am not the best source of words of wisdom, by any means; four years later I am still figuring out this home schooling gig. But I decided to repost my article on What I Would Do Differently from Life Without School. If you haven’t been to LWOS, you need to check it out. There are some amazing writers there, with many years of collective experience with unschooling, home schooling, parenting and creative learning. I wrote a bit more about starting the home schooling journey here.

Creative Blogging

My friend Sheryl at Taking the Challenge honored me with a Creative Blogger Award.

Sheryl has been a bloggin’ friend since the very beginning, when I had my first weblog at HomeSchoolBlogger. (I have since left HSB - like many other people - as a conscientious objector and have had … er … about a dozen other blogs.) She was my very first commenter. Until she visited, I didn’t know a web log could be a social outlet and a way to meet new friends, as well as a Place to Put Stuff. Right after that, I read her article on encouraging reluctant writers, which (being an eclectic unschooly type) was very interesting to me.
I usually avoid this kind of meme, but I think I’ll give this a go.
My Five Picks for the Creative Blogger Award:
1. Maura at Woodstone Prairie, incidentally, was another of my first blogging friends. She stopped by […]

Rattler bug?

This guy makes a LOT of noise. when he sounded off in the living room tonight it scared the beejeebers out of me. He’d better not make too much noise tonight. Right now he’s in one of J’s bug containers until he can see and hopefully hear him!

on that note, i will see you all on the weekend. I’m off to bed right now, and tomorrow we head to the lake till Friday night. I can’t wait!
Au revoir!

Fishy birthday to you, Superboy!

For a slightly early birthday present, dh took Superboy out on a charter fishing trip today. They did VERY well! Here are some highlights:
Superboy’s got a hit!

(that’s the charter boat captain looking on from behind)
It’s a king salmon! His first of the season!

Not to be outdone, dh scores this monster of a fish:

After catching their limit of kings (two each) they decided to go after some halibut.
Here are a couple of the big ones they pulled in:

What a great birthday present for a happy sailor boy (and a happy dad, too)!

Getting Better

It was pointed out to me this weekend that it’s pretty easy to gauge my mood by my blog… if I’m not here posting, I’m probably hiding out in misery. I didn’t mean to be so transparent!
I’ve had a very rough time, emotionally, since getting the news of our delay. But I’m pulling through it now and back to mostly-normal.
JediBoy and I had a great day up until about 3:30. Before that, we read (a book of folktales called Crow & Fox and Magic Tree House #32), listened to music (Goin’ to the Zoo by Tom Paxton), played a game (Listening Lotto) and had lots and lots of imaginary play together.

We listened to an audio version of We’re Going on a Bear Hunt (Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury) and acted it out using our playsilks as the swishy swashy grass, river, mud, forest, snowstorm, […]

Long Day

What a long day.
Ever go to the grocery store and just not know what to get? I have been doing this a lot lately. Then we end up going to the grocery store every day, cuz I only pick up what I need right then, I just can’t decide. I think I am really just sick of food. I don’t want to buy it because none of it is appealing. then I have to cook it- which is also unappealing. So today we went to the store, to find nothing appealing for just tonight, and now we have to go back again tomorrow. I should add that the store is not right down the street. It is not even in the same town. Not very cost effective, or enviromentally friendly, I know.
So aside from that, we had to run into town hall where the kids were born to get copies […]

Meme, shmeme

I get kind of bored with most memes — you go from post to post reading the same questions, it gets hard to come up with answers sometimes. But this one I saw at Doc’s and Andrea’s is kind of neat — you leave a random comment here, and I’ll ask you 5 questions. Here are Andrea’s questions for me:
1. What culture fascinates you?
The Amish culture has always fascinated me. I loved “Rebecca of the Amish” and “Plain Girl” as a kid. Now, I’ve met people from Amish country who say it’s not as idyllic as it seems, but the ideal sounds so great — a community that trusts and depends upon each other, living simply and basically. Oh, well, nothing’s perfect!
2. If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?
Scotland or Ireland. I visited Scotland once and if my then-fiance […]

Random Meme

I saw this at Andrea’s and decided it would be fun.
Here are the questions Andrea asked me:
1. If you wrote a book, what would it be called and what would it be about?
If I ever do put enough words down on paper to be a book, it would be a novel, but apart from that I don’t know. I have several ideas, but none of them fleshed out enough to be a book.
2. I’m coming over for dinner; whatcha makin’?
I’m not! Kevin will grill hamburgers, I’ll have a potato salad in the fridge that I made yesterday, and I’ll serve lots of chips and cold drinks. That way we can just gab and gab while Kevin does the cooking!
3. Are you going to do the prom thing for your homeschooled kids?
Wow - I haven’t even considered that! Since Natalie’s only in 5th grade, I have a while to think about […]
