Homeschool Journal Dot Net

This week…

This has been a week.
On Sunday night at church ds5 started to get warm.  We left and when we got home he was really hot.  That was the start of our week long virus.  I have been to the Dr.’s 2 times for it and 1 time for well child check-ups.  The children all got the virus except our dd1.  As of today they are all doing a bit better.  I think it should be over before Sunday church.  I hope so.  If not it will make for another long week.  I love my church and love the time I spend there!  We are fortunate to have a wonderful Pastor!
At the well child checks I talked to the Dr. about ds2 and ds4 because they have a hard time falling asleep at night.  Sometimes it takes 1 1/2 hours or so before they can settle down to sleep.  It makes […]

Good Shepherd, good enough

For quite some time I’ve been wanting to do the Good Shepherd presentation from Moira Farrel’s Home Catechesis album. It’s a beautiful presentation and just perfect to kick off the school year. But I have been putting off doing it until I had everything just right. Well, I finally decided that I was not going to have everything just perfect, and I needed to make it happen soon, ready or not.
So despite my exceedingly gimp sheepfold, I swallowed my pride and we did the lesson today. Happily it went very well and JBug was enchanted by the whole thing. I should have known the beauty of the lesson would shine through even my less-than stellar materials.

After the presentation she worked with the materials by herself for quite some time, having the shepherd lead the sheep safely in and out of the fold. When she was done she remarked “The shepherd […]

Living jewels!

The kids and I have been mesmerized by these tiny living jewels which have recently shown up at our home.

Isn’t that delightful!?! And the picture does not do it justice! They are about the size of a small ladybug, so they are hard to photograph properly with my only average camera. In the sunlight they absolutely glitter with gold and have these amazing clear glass-like plates. We have identified it as a mottled tortoise beetle (Deloyola guttata) but I don’t think the name suits it at all. Mottled, indeed! This treasure deserves a much nobler name! (Here is a much better image at Bugguide.)
Even after all these years of observation, nature never ceases to amaze!

First week of school

The first day started out terrible. I was starting to get crabby at about 9:00 a.m. I know a little ridiculous. But if you knew how my children were behaving you would understand. I finally calmed down and we got started shortly after that and the rest of the day went fairly well. I have to say I was totally shocked! Today was a little rough because one of my children was in a crabby mood. It is okay for mom but not for the kiddos, right? He finally came around though because I threatened to take away his all-nighter. The older 3 did some extra reading and schoolwork so that they can stay up all night and watch movies. I know probably not a good idea but it got them reading. This was really for one of my […]

Caution: Crazy looking critter

You all remember our Tomatosphere project, right? The one where we planted tomato seeds that had been exposed to space. Well, the other day I thought we’d picked up an alien life form, along with the seeds.
At first, I didn’t know what the heck was leaving tiny little poop pellets all over my deck. I thought it might be a rabbit, because that’s kinda what they looked like. But no, on closer inspection I found this:

Check out how much of that green tomato he has munched on!! This guy is about four inches long with a little stinger on his back end… at least I think it’s his back end…. kinda hard to tell.
Anyway, I came in and GB and I looked him up on the computer….. hmmm, should we look under crazy critter? No, let’s try large caterpillar. After doing an image search on Google, we came up with […]

I spy . . .

I got the idea from a Montessori schooling book. Ada and I enjoy it.
“I spy something that begins with [insert sound ssss].”
“Snake!”
“Very good! What do you spy?”
“I spy something that begins with ‘tray’.”
“Is it train?”
“It is!”
We have lots of fun and we’re learning!

Ada and Serena

We visited Serena today, and played nicely for a while. Then, as naptime approached, Ada’s proximity began to wear on Serena who started to shout every time Ada touched her. Taking her cue from that, Ada proceeded to touch, tackle, and hug Serena at every chance.
This prompted screams and kicking from Serena, (wicked?) laughter from Ada, and various instructions such as, “Serena, do not kick her–just tell her you don’t want her to do that,” and “Ada, Serena doesn’t want to be touched so you need to stop touching her,” from we mothers.
As these exchanges became more frequent, and Rachel mentioned that it was about time for Serena’s nap, I told Ada we were going to go.
“Stay, stay!” erupted from Serena and
“Can we stay and play?” from Ada.
What?! They wanted to keep this up? Okay, but no touching Serena if she doesn’t […]

Soporific

You know how you try to set your three year old up to say or do the hilarious or ingenious thing you have seen or heard in private, hoping to reproduce the astounding event in front of witnesses?
Like, Tommy, tell Grandma what you call the . . .
And then Tommy either does or does not perform as hoped?
Well, I didn’t even have to do that! Grammy and Grandaddy were visiting and Ada was a delightful chatterbox, rattling off interesting facts and stories about her various stuffed animals and it just happened to be at a lull in the adult conversation, when everyone’s attention was right on her, that Ada said:
“Bugs doesn’t want the peanuts because peanuts are soporific and they make him sleepy.”
I watched Grammy’s mouth open at soporific, and I quietly hoped Ada was going to end the sentence with sleepy to demonstrate that she […]

Maddie the Hedgehog

Dh has seen a hedgehog in our garden while he’s been locking up before bed lately.  Tonight, Flopsy stayed up later than usual and the hedgehog appeared so Dh told her to come and look.  He was snuffling around quite happily (the hedgehog, that is…not Dh!).   Flopsy has just asked me to say “Tell them that hedgehogs eat raisins and weetabix and insects and slugs…that’s all”.  We found out that information at the British Hedgehog Preservation Society website which we looked up when Flopsy asked what they eat and what they do.  Well, what the website actually says is what they eat naturally, and what people can put out for hedgehogs to eat.   They also say that it’s not ‘our’ hedgehog as hedgehogs often like visiting lots of different gardens.   Flopsy’s now put out a plate of broken up weetabix and raisins but it hasn’t reappeared yet.  She’s named it Maddie […]

Difficult, Past Week

On Sunday morning I received a call from my sis, the one I knew would be coming. My Dad had taken a turn for the worst, and I should head to his home soon. Two years ago Dad was found with colon cancer, the following month we learned it had metastasized to his liver, and he has fought it through surgery, liver ablations, and chemo. Amazingly during this time he has also traveled extensively, gone on cruises, met a new great-granddaughter, and enjoyed his time between medical treatments.
I packed up the boys on Monday and we drove to his home with the plans of spending a few days. It turned out that Dad really wanted me to stay all week, so we did. It has been a difficult week as I have watched Dad go downhill, losing strength, becoming disoriented and then […]

We’re off and running…and stumbling…already

This made me smile yesterday after a “stumble”…

I also thought of heading this post with the title “You’d think I’d know how to do this by now!”
This is our 10th year of homeschooling. My two older children each homeschooled a portion of their high school years, the next child homeschooled for grades 3 thru 6 and Joshua has homeschooled since birth Some would say this makes me a “veteran”. A veteran at what I am not really sure though. Yes I have had years now of experiences, good ones and not so good ones. I had to smile and nod in agreement as I read Jennifer’s recent post Breakfast of Planners because even as a veteran I have been there, done that!
This year I got a little cocky as I skipped this step. I have learned that Josh needs some structure to his studies or he gets very unsettled with total freedom but does not […]

nice!

Robin over at Martinzoo very kindly gave me this award…

I’m not sure my kids would agree with her about my “niceness”, but it gives me something to work towards!
Thanks Robin!

OUT OUT OUT OUT OUT

Let’s hear a HUGE SIGH OF RELIEF!!!
Our paperwork cleared PGN today, I’m staring at a copy of the decree right now!
This means the adoption has been officially cleared on the Guatemala side!
Next, our attorney will -
- get a new birth certificate issued from her birthplace with her first name and our last name (woo hoo!)
- get a passport issued for her so she can travel home with us
- get a 2nd DNA test done on the baby
- take all the paperwork into translation, so there are Spanish and English copies of *everything*
- turn all the copies of all of that into the US Embassy, who will then
- issue a Pink slip - giving us the date and time for our appointment in Guatemala
The agency told me today that most families right now are waiting about 6 weeks between PGN out and Pink and then usually travel 1-2 weeks after getting […]

Aargh! I totally screwed up!

OK, this whole school thing is making me crazy. Not so much the decision to put the girls in school (still angsty), but the actually getting ready for school. Boy, what a hassle! First, Tuesday we had to go uniform shopping because once I finally went and picked up the information packet (Monday, a week and a half after they said they mailed it), I realized that the giant tote of fall hand-me-downs we just were gifted with would NOT be keeping us from school clothes shopping after all. We tried Target first, our Target didn’t have the uniforms, but one up by the mall does. So we tried Wal-mart across the street. I really didn’t want to give WM my money, but didn’t really want to drive to the other Target so we looked. Nothing in the right sizes in the right […]

Homeschooling for beginners

It’s the fall, people are panicking.  Especially those that ‘just’ decided not to send their kids back to school.
I have a friend from my state homeschool list that I’ve known for a few years and highly respect.  We don’t homeschool the same way, but there are a lot of things I think we  see eye to eye on.  One of those things is how accidental homeschoolers should start.
She’s recently pulled a few posts together under one topic and they should be read by anyone just beginning their journey or feeling like something is not going the way it should.
Go check it out - Homeschool Notebook

39 weeks

Ive been taking all these preggo belly shots with my computer camera and the photobooth program. Which means its too hard to get my head in the shot-if I remember I’ll try to get someone to take some whole body shots before I have this baby! We went to another tie dye party yesterday, so in honor, we wore some previous work. My shirt I did last summer, Zibby’s we did 2 weeks ago.
Buzz and I are going to go celebrate our 7th wedding anniversary sat night, instead of our actual anniversary which is the 10th. Although the 7th year is apparently wool I dont have anything picked out for a present. I think a brand new baby is going to have to do for this year.

Gorey’s Tribbles

As I am a fan (but not what you’d call a Fan) of both Star Trek and Edward Gorey, I was rolling with laughter this morning at reading The Trouble With Tribbles, as drawn by Edward Gorey. HT - PisecoSis.
Today holds a park day, probably, soccer practice, and a lot of crossed fingers. Another family on one of the adoption forums got out of PGN yesterday after being resubmitted the day before we were. That makes today a cliffhanger day - especially since if we don’t hear today, we’ve got an infinitely long three-day weekend ahead of us. So keep all your fingers crossed for me.

North to Alaska

…. for a few days, to visit my parents who live up there. I’m taking Brendan but the rest of the kids will stay home with Kevin.
Prayers and good thoughts would be appreciated. I’m a bit torn…. looking forward to seeing my mom and dad who I haven’t seen since last year, but feeling off balance about leaving home once again. I’m going to miss the whole crew, but particularly my little ones… already been away a fair bit this summer. This will be the last time for quite a while, I sure hope.
I’m looking forward to seeing Alaska with Brendan though! It’s my home state but he hasn’t been there for about 15 years. I think he will like it!

Chapter 10 Bible Lessons

Parents as Instructors in Religion
“The history of England is now reduced to a game at cards,––the problems of mathematics to puzzles and riddles. There wants but one step further, and the Creed and Ten Commandments may be taught in the same manner, without the necessity of the grave face, deliberate tone of recital, and devout attention hitherto exacted from the well-governed childhood of this realm”––Waverly.
Sunday Schools are Necessary––That parents should make over the religious education of their children to a Sunday School is, no doubt, as indefensible as if they sent them for their meals to a table maintained by the public bounty. We ‘at home’ plead not guilty to this particular count. Our Sunday Schools are used by those toil-worn and little-learned parents who are willing to accept at the hands of the more leisured classes this service of the religious teaching of their children. That is, the Sunday […]

Review of the new stuff

We are just about two weeks into our new year and things are going so very well.
This year we have a nice mix of the familiar and the new.  We are keeping much of Superboy’s routine the same, with some Bravewriter, some projects, and lots of science and nature. Much of it is a continuation of what we had been doing before (like tuesday tea and morning read-alouds), just with a new twist or two.
Here are a few of the NEW things we are liking so far:
Superboy’s math DVDs  from The Learning Company. Though he would likely tell you otherwise, these are working quite well. He is able to get the majority of it done in 2 days, leaving the remaining three open for math projects, living math books, and his geometry studies (beginning next week).  So, I would call them a hit. Its just that right now the DVDs […]
