Isabelle hits 11!!!!

Isabelle has just turned 11 years old on the 24th of November. How the time passes so quickly. It was just yesterday it seems that Bryce and I were living in a tiny little apartment in steilacoom, Washington. Only living there for 5 months we found out that our first child was on its way. Here we are 11 years later celebrating. She growing up so fast. which in turn makes Bryce and I feel older. Well as my new tradition suggest, I would love to share some timeless photo’s of the birthday girl. Enjoy

Homeschool Update

Just realized that I have not really talked much about what we have been up to lately. This is mostly for family who might be interested, so feel free to skip if you want!
This Fall wound up being really quite busy and I am almost looking forward to things slowing down a little bit.
Kyle had been asking to take gymnastics for awhile now, so I finally was able to find a class through the county rec center that fit our schedule (on Mondays). Jason decided that it looked like fun, so he has just started this session.
Tuesdays were NoVaUnschoolers park days which were pretty much an all day thing…these were a lot of fun (it has been cold lately, so we have not been for the past couple of weeks). The boys have several friends who come and they have a great time playing tag or wading in the creek […]

Welcome!

Hello to all the people coming by to check out my blog for the HBA or to see who it was that tooted the whistle on the awards!
I’m sure you want to read the discussion that lead to me emailing HBA about the concerns raised here. It started with a tongue-in-cheek post after I visited the other blogs nominated in my catagory. I will sometimes title my posts with odd ball things that are going through my head and this one comes from the Pogo comic strip. It never even crossed my mind that the other bloggers were my ‘enemies.’ I was just setting a tone.
A comment on that post lead me to do a little research. I couldn’t find much - but we’re talking 5 mins of looking - but I did see that there was room for concerns and posted about them.
Anyway,
Who am […]

Grand Illumination

We had the best time tonight!
We went to the Grand Illumination in Richmond, Virginia. It was SO beautiful. And there were so many things to do that we couldn’t possibly do them all. We went with our good friends and their children, and for an entire night we had sweet, enchanted, well-behaved kids. Ok, pick your chins up off the floor…. it can happen sometimes, especially when they are so nicely entertained.
I was hesitant to go. I was tired, and was thinking that this would be one more thing to do and cross off my list. But I am so glad we went. We had good company, we had loads of fun, and our eyes had a visual feast.
First we all went to eat together, kids at one table, adults at the other table….. nice!
Then we eased on down the road to stand in line for the free horse and […]

In-Home Conference

I finally finished the samples (actually I should say Girl and I finally finished, since she made a set as well) of what the kids are going to be doing in my workshops at the In-Home Conference.
The kids ages 4 to 7 are making bookmarks.

And then the older class will be making both wristbands and these hexagonal discs (that make either a nice coaster or they can attach a key chain to it).

And then there were 5

Sigh.   We lost yet another puppy.   Spent yesterday thinking that this really isn’t fun, or rewarding, anymore.   I was overcome with guilt at both what my kids were going through and what my level of ineptness must be that three puppies had now died on my watch—the latest with no warning.   The vet at the shelter did a necropsy and let me know that there were multiple organ anomolies, one of which caused her death.  As all of the puppies who died had the same markings (white with brown spots), the current theory is that they all shared similar congenital defects.   Still, so hard to go through and I find myself obsessively watching over the remaining five puppies (who appear to be thriving).
Here is a shot of them today, at 2 weeks 2 days old.   They have really grown.

Tomorrow should be a day of much needed frivolity.  Going to see […]

O Boy

My Dad and his wife are here for a very short visit.  It’s the first time they’ve met BabyGirl and the first time we’ve seen them since - hmm, maybe July?  JediBoy was very, very excited to see his Pappy.
They brought a nice wooden rocker for BabyGirl’s first birthday (a tradition in our family) and several outfits and other presents from South Africa.  JediBoy got an “unbirthday” package with a Meccano set and a book and notebook from South Africa, but Pappy told him there might be one more thing for him out in the car.
Today they brought it inside (after: playing Legos, where JediBoy accused Pappy of “only building weirdos,” putting on a puppet show, reading books, wrestling, and then playing basketball outside).  JediBoy was beside himself with glee at the “grown-up” present he received:

A Lionel O-Gauge Pennsylvania Flyer set.
My Dad loves model trains and has a big collection […]

More chemistry fun, and more video!

More science going on here! In fact, we’ve three different experiments going on at once, and for some reason, they all involve vinegar! Well, it is just such a handy little acid to use!
Yesterday’s experiment involved heating milk and then adding vinegar to denature the casein (milk protein).

Looks really gross, and I expected it to smell sour, but instead it smelled exactly like Elmer’s glue. Not too surprising, really since this is essentially how the glue is made! Superboy found out that this is the reason for the picture of the cow on the Elmer’s bottle!
Anyway, he filtered off the solids and formed them into a couple of molds to dry. In a few days they should be hard “plastic” and paintable.
Today’s experiment involved the nifty little trick of extinguishing a lit candle with CO2 from vinegar and baking soda. You really should try this if you get a chance. So […]

December Planning Post

It’s time to plan my next month, although it almost feels silly to do a normal plan for December when it is already so full of holiday “stuff”.  But maybe that’s the perfect reason to start off with a plan…
Carbon’s School
We’ve already started getting lax about pulling out the school boxes everyday.  Once again, I’m really pleased with this entire box system, because it’s not a big deal if we only open them a few times a week - no need to adjust plans or fuss about being “behind”.  I’m going to keep the boxes stocked, but not worry about getting any thing “done” this month.  We’ve started making little phonics “books” out of index cards I staple together, and that plus handwriting will fill the Reading and Writing box.  Math and Science will be full of connect-the-dot pages Carbon is enjoying and a stack of books about the North […]

The Symbols of Christmas

Well, we had a fun day today.  It was just what I needed.  We are hosting a homeschool co-op study on the Symbols of Christmas.  Dawn did most of the work.  Thanks, Dawn!!!  The kids are doing this lapbook from In the Hands of a Child. Even the littles got involved in the cutting and pasting.
The other moms and I so enjoyed the fellowship, and after some discussion on food issues (healthy, acceptable to kids, etc.), we’re thinking of doing some cooking together as well. After Christmas we’ll be starting another lapbook as well as doing a library day together. It does me a world of good to have the interaction. And to know others are going through such similar situations as wives, moms, and women in general.
And then after everyone was gone, and I had a chance to sit down and read some blogs, I was delighted to see […]

Black is black?

What if molecules cannot be separated by filtration OR evaporation?
Another technique you can use to separate mixtures is CHROMATOGRAPHY. It is based on the fact that different molecules stick to each other in different ways. In Greek, the word chromatography means to write with color. This technique was so named because it was originally used to separate colored compounds.
In order to show GB chromatography we did a simple activity. It’s called paper chromatography. It will show him that ink is really a mixture of several dye colors. Each of the individual ink colors can be separated from each other using this technique.
To set up the activity, I got an old shoe box. Why do we have so many of these laying around? And why do they ALWAYS fall on my head when I try to get them off the closet shelf? ….But I digress…. We then cut three long strips, […]

The Sun

Hi all!
In my Astronomy book, they teach you about the sun and planets and stuff!!! It’s really, really cool!!!! Here’s something I wrote for the sun!

The Sun

Did you know it’s not good to stare at the sun? Why? First, I’ll tell you some facts and

then I’ll tell you why it’s not good to stare! The sun is very active. The fire on the sun is

jumping, hopping and rolling about, just like something a campfire would do. Sunspots

are cooler than the rest of the sun. Sun spots are 4,500 degrees, but that is still very cool

compared to the rest of the sun. Many scientists believe that sunspots affect the weather

here on earth. Now, do you want to know why it’s not good to look at the sun? Good!

Even though the sun is 92,935,700 miles away […]

A Few Words

I’ve been scarce, I know.  I had a bit (my family would probably say *huge*) of a meltdown on the weekend as a result of several factors, and it’s taken me a few days to get back to normal.  Uh, semi-normal?  Ok, back to being able to function well.  Let’s just say Cole said it well this morning, when after calling him upstairs to have a chat with him about our plans for the day, he said, “You seem happy today, Mom.”  Oh, my pride….
So there are a few things I wanted to mention.  First of all, thanks again to Michelle at Scribbit for hosting the writing contest. I enjoyed the challenge (I haven’t done much writing in years, though I did a LOT of it in high school), and am looking forward to another one. Congratulations to the winner. For a chance to see some good writing, check here.
Also, […]

The Christmas Story?

Since we got rid of our DirecTV, I asked my mom to record Shrek the Halls on ABC last night. We watched it this evening. In the beginning, Shrek has no interest in Christmas. When he discovers that it is important to Fiona, he storms into town to find out how to give her a Christmas. He’s given a book called “Christmas for the Village Idiot” that explains, step-by-step, how to have Christmas. The last step is “tell the Christmas story.” I thought, Wow! A modern holiday special that actually includes the Christmas story? Cool! I should have known better.
You want to know what the Christmas story was? ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas. Now, I love the classic Christmas poem as well as the next person, but calling this the Christmas story? Later, when Shrek admits that he has never had a Christmas before and he doesn’t know what it […]

Home is where the worship is

I used to be more serious on my old blog until I got sick of myself and decided to take it easy, but today’s post is going to be more serious than usual.
I have been intending to start this study I found out about through Beth for quite some time. Beth’s post about her reasons for doing the study and Julie’s post about her reasons for doing the study are so inline with the very things my husband and I have been thinking and I knew I would benefit from participating.
My son plays with a neighbor boy (they attended public school together, so we’ve known the family for several years). They live just around the corner from us, so we let the boys run back and forth in between houses when they are heading for a playdate (can you call it a “playdate” when they are 10?).
One late afternoon when […]

Our trip away (without kids!)

Five years ago, my husband and I were married on Veteran’s Day weekend, with the logic that it would give our guests an easier time traveling if they had the extra day off.  But getting married on a three day weekend also means that we usually have a three day weekend around the time we’re celebrating our anniversary.  To get away for four days this year, we only had to take one day off work.
We had a hard time deciding where to go.  We both wanted something cozy and fairly private (so no bed and breakfasts), with things to do but also plenty of chance to just relax.  In the end, we booked a room at the Lake Quinault Lodge.  It was a really good choice, and I would love to go there again.  Our room had a view of the lake, and was nice enough.  But then the main […]
