This picture isn’t anything special, really. Slightly out of focus, bad lighting, not at all well composed. But I love it just the same. Wanna know why? Because of what it says about our homeschool. Let me explain.
Today I placed a piece of paper and a watercolor set on the shelf next to JBug’s parts of a horse puzzle. She saw it and was immediately drawn to the work. And she knew (without me saying a word) exactly what she wanted to do with it. She used the puzzle pieces to trace the horse onto the paper. Then she painted the horse. Then she found her “parts of a horse” cards and she used them to correctly label her painting with all of the parts, carefully checking her spelling with the words on the cards. She did it all with complete independence, totally self-directed, and humming a happy tune the […]

I know I said I was all done with this blog, but there’s just one more thing I have to say. I just started another blog on blogger. This one is, while mostly based on true happenings and people, completely fictional. This is just a way for me to ‘express my creativity’ through writing. There is magic and other such pleasantries for all you fantasy lovers. I hope you enjoy it!

Here is a list of some of the lapbooking (and some not directly lapbooking) sites that we use. They are in no particular order and are kind of messed up. You can see pictures of all our lapbooks we have done at our other blog, The Duncan Yo-Yo’s and at our website The Duncan Family. There is a much more organized list of website links we use at our website. I unfortuantly have not updated it since June of 2007. I will be working on it much more as soon as I get time off from my evening job.

Wednesdays are homeschool skate day at the Fairfax Ice Arena, which is also the home of Olympic hopefuls.
Today was Braeden’s first time skating. At one point, he asked to put a helmet on - ROFL! You’d think he was doing full body slam ice skating. He got discouraged and afraid and returned his skates. After a short time, he wanted to get back on the ice. And he did great after that. He learned to tackle the ice.
And now he wants to go back!

Saturday, Janurary 19th, right after we got back from Florida, was the day for the annual Pine Derby race. Braeden worked hard on his car - and he took 1st in his den and 2nd in the pack.
Only four days back from our Holiday away, Dad and Braeden were able to crank out a passable ‘Pinewood Derby’ Racer for Braeden’s Cub Scout Den Annual Race. ‘The Viper’ lives!!!
NO major powertools all handsaws and palm sanders!!
The Pack holds round robin style event, with each set of cars running all four lanes against all cars. Each set of heats is broken into the various age groups (Tiger-Wolf-Bear-Webelos), Braeden is a Wolf Scout (7-8 yr olds). And the Wolf winner is ….’The Viper’
Just a bit happy!!!
Finally, the best of all four race against each other and Braeden came in 2nd from the entire Pack.
Braeden and his Wolfmates all had a great time!!

Ok, so we went sledding today. We were the first ones on the hill and we had it to ourselves for about an hour. It was so pristine and white and then it was covered in tracks and slide marks.
Did we do all that? I guess so. We finally got a chance to use our snowball maker and look at this, a perfect snowball.
They really hurt though; I might have to make a rule that you can’t actually throw them at anyone. We sledded and made snowballs (or snow volcanoes in Bethany’s case), sledded some more, snowboarded, and ate some snow.
Now Grace knows why you shouldn’t go down in front on my sled, Hannah was covered in snow by the time we got to the bottom.
On my last run I hit the bump at the bottom and spun out, fell out of the sled and skidded […]

What is Lapbooking?
I am very pleased to share this wonderful article with you. Lapbooking is a wonderful educational project that my children truly enjoy. If you would like to see photos of a lapbook my daughter made, as well as an article she wrote about what she learned, please view the January 2007 edition of The Homeschool Herald
What is Lapbooking?
by Katie Kubesh
As a co-owner and writer/researcher for In the Hands of a Child, the Premier Supplier of Ready-to-Assemble Lapbooks, I am asked a lot of questions about lapbooking. Many people have heard the term “lapbooking” but have no idea what it is or are overwhelmed by the entire concept of hands-on activities and unit studies. Lapbooks are great ways to include hands-on activities to your student’s curriculum! Some of the great questions I am asked include:
1. What is a lapbook? A lapbook is a hands-on tool that you can use […]

* I got my first traffic ticket after 14&1/2 yrs. of driving. I was bummed.
* I only slept an hour last night.
* I was filling out month-end billings at 3am this morning. Don’t ask.
* I had to adjust amounts due to the change in HST and kept messing it up.
* By 4am I thought I was finished what should have been a 20 minute job.
* Then I realized I still had two amounts wrong, and had to fill yet another form out to correct it.
* As I was finishing up the last few calculations, sans calculator, the power went out.
* By 5:30am we were getting kids out of bed to go to work with Daddy - it was too cold to stay home!
* Next year I want a wood stove! And a propane-powered range.
* I did not nap today.
* I ran more than twice as far as I normally do […]

This week we had to take our vacuum cleaner in for a repair. I dreaded the idea of taking a whole morning or two of my time to load up the three kids in sub-zero temps and drive to and from the vacuum cleaner store, a good 20-25 minute drive each way.
On Monday, I decided to combine the trip with a trip to the MOA where we were able to hang out at our favorite Lego store, make Lego cars and check out the latest merchandise. That worked out okay because I had been promising them a trip to the Lego store for over a week.
And today, I had to pick up the vacuum cleaner which involved another 5o minute round-trip drive to the same store/repair center. But this time we brought Harry Potter along! My dd suggested that we pick up the book and audio-tapes (which were waiting for us on the library reserves shelves) before we drove across […]

My mom has switched from Typepad to here (Homeschool Journal) so I will lose my other blog. I think that it will be easier if I just use this blog as an ordinary blog and an online book magazine. That means that this blog won’t just have book reviews and stories but it will also have things that talk about my daily life.

I’ve decided to move over here from Typepad. Some things are still in boxes (like blogrolls) but I hope to get the place all unpacked and sorted out over the next week or so. I’ve imported all my old posts and the comments came with them so I’ll be closing up shop at the other place soon. Hey, I even managed to import all the posts from when I first started blogging as a guest over at Cate’s place.
Maybe I’ll even have something profound to say in the next day or so. Make myself worthy of that award Audrey so graciously bestowed on me.

Dennis has been wanting to get this blog going for months now, but I just never got around to showing him how to post. After he finished a creation today, he decided it was time. It took a while to get the bugs out (thanks, Andrea), but Loads of Legos is now up and running. Yes, we know it’s officially Lego, not Legos, but he insisted that’s the name he wants.
He welcomes visitors and comments, but please be aware that I have comments set to moderated. I’ll view and approve comments as I get a chance.
Have a look at his first post on Loads of Legos

These are the three words I keep trying to repeat to myself today: Sovereignity, empathy, and acceptance. You see, I am reading Myla and Jon Kabat-Zinn’s Everyday Blessings: The Inner Work of Mindful Parenting once again. It is a book that takes time to read. It takes time to absorb all the wisdom within it. I had read parts of it before but like a lot of other books that I borrow from the library, I had to return it before I could finish reading all of it. And I really need to read this book now.
Here is a nugget from one of the chapters in the book entitled “Acceptance”:
“As we learn to observe and accept our own wide range of feelings, including very turbulent ones, as part of our effort to be mindful, we naturally become more aware of other people’s feelings, especially our children’s. We come to know something of […]

Bach walked to Hamburg to hear a man play the organ. On the way he slept in cow’s stall. When he heard the musican he wanted to play the organ more. On the way back he stopped at the inn, but he did not have any money. Then someone dropped some herring heads on the ground and they had money in them! Bach was so happy and ate happily and wondered who had dropped herring heads.

I am only now recovering from the flu. Last Saturday was the worst day and I was only awake for a few hours of it. Today, I still have a cough but I have lots more energy and I don’t feel nearly as dumb as I have been. Today, though, Fiona has slowed down and is coughing. Thank goodness for PBS; she is quietly watching from the couch while slowly sliding to horizontal. She does not like to slow down for anything as unproductive as being sick. And Johnny reports that he has a cough and is slowing down, too. Well, I’m grateful that I’m well enough now that I can make sandwiches for them, change the sheets and scrub out the tub.

Here is something that my mom did and I thought would be fun. Now you need a Ipod or a MP3 player and I have a MP3 player so I can do this. Well, you can do anything just something that plays music and has a shuffle button. Ok, here are the rules.
1. Put your music player on shuffle.
2. Press forward for each question.
3. Use the song title as the answer to the question.
4. NO CHEATING.
Understand?! If you see my answers I think you will get the idea!

I did not read this book but my mom read it a loud to me and my bro’s. I love this book! There is I think 5 books of this series. Now here is a pic of what the book looks like. Now here is the review and also you can look below and see the review of The Slippery Slope or just click right there!
Ok, now time for the review!
This book Jared and his brother, Simon, and then his sister, Mallary more into this new house. And of course! They think that it is horrible!! The wood is rusty, their mom tells them not to go up in the attic because they could fall down into the living room. Well, they hear things in the wall so they make a HOLE in the wall. There are things like dead bugs, a doll head. Wierd things.
Well, soon they […]

This is about the strangest weather radar I have ever seen.
We are in a green area but the *rain* is falling as sleet/ice with a few puffy snowflakes mixed in. Our school closed at 10:00 for high school drivers and 10:30 for bus riders. FYI my oldest two attend public hs.
Here is that tree from the last post:
This is our picnic table. At 9:30 it was entirely bare and at about 10:45:
Yes it is two-tone. It is from the 70’s or maybe early 80’s. The top was that weird green-not avocado but not quite neon either. The color is beaten bronze and looks good but the 116F heatwave stopped the update. If painted according to label directions (always follow haha) the paint was drying before it reached the chairs. If held closer it was wet but ran. So it is on the *this* spring to-do list.
Anyway the […]

Melissa Wiley wrote about the Journey North Mystery Class challenge over at The Bonny Glen yesterday. How is it that I’ve never heard about this project before? It sounds most excellent, and the kids and I are getting involved post haste - the first “task” was scheduled for Monday, so I’m a little behind in starting, but I don’t think it will matter in the end.
So, what is it? I’ll take the liberty of letting Melissa explain:
Journey North has selected ten classes of schoolchildren in cities all around the world. Their locations are kept secret until the big reveal in May. These are the ten “mystery classes,” and the game is to figure out where in the world they are.
You begin by figuring out their latitudes. Each week you compare your own local photoperiod (the amount of time between sunrise and sunset) to the photoperiods of the ten mystery classes. […]
