The Last Chapter of The Ark

Here is the LAST chapter of the ark. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did writing it!
9
They worked and worked on the ark for the last couple days, finally God said,” We are done, you must stay tonight and tomorrow it will start raining and there will be a flood, all animals that are good will go on the ark and will be saved along with all of you, Jefferson family,”
All of them were so shocked because of how fast time had traveled; they thought they at least had another day or two.
That night they went to sleep to get a good rest before the big day tomorrow.
“Do you think we will be all right?” Adam asked Mrs. Jefferson.
“Yes, I know that with God, he won’t let us down,” she answered.
After those few sentences they all fell asleep and dreamt of everything that could happen […]

I’m a Duke!

Sometime Marquis of Tichfield, Earl of Portland, Viscount Woodstock, Baron of Cirencester, co-heir to the Barony of Ogle and renowned as the finest judge of horseflesh in England, you took the tradition of aristocratic eccentricity to unprecedented heights. Having inherited the stately home of Welbeck Abbey, you proceeded to construct miles of underground tunnels and a ballroom, in pink, beneath it. The ballroom was complete except for one small detail. It had no floor. Despite this vast home, you lived exclusively in a suite of five rooms, each one also pink.
Having been turned down by your opera singer objet d’amour, Adelaide […]

Checking in…

Yes, I am still alive. Just lots of stuff going on in real life. Hope to get back to posting soon.
In the meantime, saw this comic in several places and had to laugh out loud. The truth hurts I guess…

Be sure to check the xkcd archives…lots of hilarious stuff there!

Arctic fun!

The Iditarod ceremonial start is tomorrow, so today the littles and I took the opportunity to get into the arctic spirit!
First, Mama bear cooked up a big pot of “Polar Bear Porridge,”  ( which was actually grits with white cheese)  but when it was scooped into the baby bears’ bowls, we found it to be too hot! So while we waited for it to cool, we read this gorgeous book:

By that time the porridge was just right and the three baby polar bears gobbled it down (Mama bear, too!)

Then we went to the computer to read some more about the Iditarod. The kiddos really like me to read them Zuma’s Paw prints, which is the blog of the Iditarod’s official canine reporter! We learned a lot of interesting facts about the qualities that make an excellent Iditarod sled dog.
When we read that the Iditarod trail is 1122 miles long, JBug […]

Longmont Homeschool group BUSY

Longmont Homeschool Group  is eclectic, inclusive and growing!
After many years of enjoying and nourturing the Colorado NICHE homeschool group, it became apparent that it was 1. big enough that there was a need for a separate community for Longmont and 2. That Longmont was sort of lost in the shuffle.  At least, it was apparent to me.
So, I took the plunge and created a sister homeschool group.  Longmont NICHE is now growing nicely and quite active. We had a great turn out at park day with many homeschool teens as well as a good gaggle all other sorts of kiddos.  I’ll detail it later, the kids are begging for pizza!  Gotta go slave over a hot phone to order it. HEY! That’s hard work.

Leap!

Happy leap day! After presentation club the GS troop got together with our HS group and we had a frog themed leap day party.

There was food (including frog lollipops and frog candy), games (elefun, Mr. Mouth) an origami frog making table and a note table (where you could write yourself a time capsule note to open in four years.)

Hannah had fun eating and playing with her food.

Bethany thought the mini corn was kind of hard to eat.

The Mr. Mouth game was a lot harder than I remember; I only got 2 flies in his mouth. Hannah gave up and was just throwing them in when the mouth opened. The elefun game was a bit easier for her, though she still had trouble catching the butterflies.

The girls were sporting the green shirts they got yesterday from the Capitol, hair things, shamrock glasses and green ties from Grandma […]

Broken dryers and sippy cups

The two items mentioned in the title may seem completely unrelated, but they’re not.
Our dryer went kaput last night. It had been stumbling along, half-drying clothes for a few days, during which I alternated between telling myself, “There’s something wrong with the dryer; it’s gonna quit any day” and complete denial: “It’s just your imagination. That was a really big load - it’s completely normal to have to re-start the dryer four times to get the seams in your jeans to dry completely.”
Then, last night, when I sent Natalie downstairs with a load of damp laundry to ask Kevin to put them back in, he came up and told me that the dryer would no longer turn on. Shoot.
I called the repairman this morning, expecting to hear that I would have to wait until Monday, but he actually showed up before noon! He followed Kevin downstairs and took the […]

Dog Sledding

On Thursday, while in Maryland, we went dog sledding with Maryland Sled Dog Adventures, LLC. We braved 20 degree weather with wind chills of 11 degrees. But, honestly, this is not your everyday adventure. So, we were totally up for it. We’ve been excitedly anticipating this trip for months, and we were not disappointed.

GB and all the kids greet the dogs

GB gets some love from Sobo and Okemo

From the left, our team, Okemo (Siberian Husky), Sobo (Siberian Husky with one beautiful blue eye, and one gorgeous amber eye), Zoe (Alaskan Husky and lead dog), and T-bone (Siberian Husky - Sheltie mix). All were rescue dogs who became part of Catherine and Eric’s family.

Eric demonstrates a dog harness.

Check out that rapt attention!

GB demonstrates attaching a belly clip.

In our demonstration, these were our ‘lead dogs.’

The 7th and 8th Chapter of, “The Ark”

I hope you like these chapters! I think you will be surprised on chapter 8!
7
The next morning they woke up in Jemacore lying down in the grass. Stuart was the first on to wake up. When he got up he prayed to God to give them a meal.
Soon when the other Jefferson woke up they saw a big feast with everything they could eat, eggs, toast, pancakes, waffles, and lots more!
“Were did all this food come from?” Mrs. Jefferson asked.
“I prayed to God to give us this nice feast,” Stuart said.
They all started eating and eating and then God said, ”You must start on the ark, but tomorrow you can take a brake,”
Once they were all done eating they started to work. Mrs. Jefferson helping Suzie and some Angles nail together wood, Stuart, Adam, and some other Angles marking the wood along with cutting it.
They had worked for a long […]

A chorus of frogs

While at the Aquarium, we got to see the Frogs: A Chorus of Colors exhibit. This was GB’s favorite exhibit.

All the kids liked watching the frog video. You can see some of the videos here.

It’s hard to get nice pictures through glass.

This is a Blue Poison Dart frog. This beautiful little guy wasn’t even discovered until 1968!
Want to know a surprise? The most poisonous creature in the world is not a snake or a spider. It’s a frog. The Golden Dart Frog (Phyllobates terribilis) contains about one milligram of poison, which is enough to kill 10,000 mice, and perhaps enough to kill 10 to 20 humans if the poison reaches their bloodstreams.

Frogs are very beneficial to us. Besides being very important in the food chain, frogs help farmers by eating billions of insects every year, and protecting valuable crops. Frog skin is coated with a protective toxin that keeps predators […]

Cat photos

I thought I better take some cat photos.

I took three of Donner. Only the last one wasn’t blurry.

Algebra Unplugged: Book Review

Attention all you math-phobics. You might want to read this book. (I’ve used the US link because it has the “search inside” feature. It is also on the .ca site.) It is written by a “word-guy” with technical advice from a “math-guy” to explain algebra to folks who are (or were) lost and confused by math teachers and math textbooks. It is designed as a companion to these so you don’t have to actually do any math to read the book. And it is funny. Though if you sing tenor, you might find some of the jokes a bit offensive.
I got this out of my local library to review as a possibility for “things to have around the house” when we are finished with Challenge Math. It was on one of the Living Math lists. I can’t believe it didn’t refer to it in my other math post. Tigger had […]

Last night was the coldest night this winter

Isn’t that crazy? It got down to -24C in the city. The night before was almost as cold and yesterday morning I took this photo of one of my kitchen windows.

Can you see the ice along the bottom? That is on the inside? Those are double-glazed windows, too.
My kitchen is on the north side of the house though that particular window faces east. All of the windows (north, east and west) in my kitchen had ice on them yesterday and today.
Of course apart from the cold, it is beautiful out there. Sunny. Clear blue sky. Snow on the ground. Dry roads. (Yes, Mat has cycled to work both days though he wouldn’t win a fashion contest for what he wears.) The cat is most upset. He wants to be out there but the cold is not his idea of a good thing, particularly when it is windy. (He goes out […]

Leap Year Day

Ani was born on the exact middle day of the month of February. February only has a middle day every four years. I’ve always thought it was neat that she was born on that uncommon middle day. This year February had a middle day again. And today is the last day. It’s amazing how fast this year has already gone. It’s 1/6 over already! Before we know it our fourth little one will be here.

Red Belt!

Dennis tested for his red belt in Soo Bahk Do last week, and was awarded the belt yesterday.
Testing pics
Doing forms

Getting ready to break. Look at that dirty foot!

The broken board

After receiving his red belt.

Belts below Dan (black belt equivalent) are just awarded before class. Right after he received his belt, and another student received a stripe on his green belt, they began the class. It doesn’t seem that long ago that I was sewing that green trim on his uniform. Now I have to take it off (tiny stitch by tiny stitch) and replace it with red trim.

He’s very excited about earning this belt. It now makes him a black belt candidate, and all classes from now on are supposed to be seen as black belt preparation. Congratulations, Kiddo!

A little encouragement

Bethany had her reading CSAP test today. Joel was making her worried about it, going on and on about how hard it is, how the teachers are mean, how you have to be quiet. But, Bethany had a great time. The test was way too easy (yeah, that’s because she’s not at a 3rd grade reading level), the teacher was nice and she saw some friends there and they did get to talk during break (of which there were 2.) I guess Joel had a bad experience last year (or could it be that the older you get the less fun it is to take a test?) Anyway, Grace and Hannah had fun at the library. I got to read 4 (count them 4) Homeschooling mags at the library while Hannah and Grace played on the computer and read. The Broomfield library is really cool; they have a whole room […]

The TV as a learning tool

I try to think of my TV as a “window on the world” and not just an “idiot box”.  There’s a lot of stupid stuff available through the TV, but then again there’s a lot of stupid stuff available through print and on the internet too.  It’s all in how you use the tool, I think.
The kids enjoy, but also learn a little tiny something, from shows like Dora and Sesame Street.  I try to get Dora on DVD or On Demand, so there won’t be commercials to fill their minds with consumer messages.  Then we have The Discovery Channel, and the fascinating show How It’s Made which shows the manufacturing process for all sorts of strange things.  Animal Planet and the History Channel also sometimes offer up things we can learn from.
Netflix lets me match documentaries to the school schedule.  When my sister was studying colonial history, she watched […]

His Grace Is Sufficient

and His mercies are new every morning.  This is all I can lean on right now.  I am so far beyond myself, which is really hard, but I know that’s just where He wants me to be.  We’re not getting much schooling done right now.  We’re watching far too much tv.  And I’m struggling with guilt for it.  But I am going to choose to turn to His grace to cover my failings, and trust that even though it doesn’t feel like it, He does care about me in the midst of this struggle.  I feel like if I could just have a few days of sleep, so many things would improve.  And yet, the more I pray the worse it gets.  I hate it.  I try to trust.  And yet when I pray, if Damara actually sleeps, then I have one, if not two or more kids up through […]

update on R

R looked worse yesterday, but overall I can tell she’s starting to mend.
Here’s her poor beat up face…. it was a lot more swollen yesterday.

But at least she had her smile back!
She was having a lot of pain in her shoulder, so I got her into the pediatrician right away (at the ER they just said she should be seen sometime this week). The pediatrician was very thorough, and said R had a “severe concussion” and that we needed to follow concussion precautions for two weeks. That means no sports… no activity of any kind that might lead to her hitting her head. She also thinks R sprained her shoulder, and has her taking large amounts of ibuprofen and keeping her arm in a sling. If the soreness doesn’t go away soon, she’ll x-ray it.
R’s memory is slowing returning, and by last night she was starting to remember riding Willy. […]

Baby Book Moments

They don’t have a spot in the baby books for “sat to listen to a whole chapter book in one sitting” but I know when JediBoy first did that. It was the summer he turned 3, and he was fascinated by all things Egyptian. I had heard about those Magic Tree House books and when we were at the bookstore one night I pulled #3 Mummies in the Morning off the shelf to glance through it. JediBoy (ThothBoy, back then) demanded that I read it to him because of the picture on the cover. I sat in one of those little green uncomfortable chairs by the train table and started reading, thinking how I’d like to see how much he would sit for. If he sat for a chapter or two at a time, I figured, I’d buy the book.
45 minutes later, I finished the […]

Election Day in Virginia

I’m going out, as soon as I get out of these slippers and find my bra, to make my voice heard. My awesome friend Adesa is running a mock election for the kids. I just completed a “candidate selector” quiz here; I was test-driving it as a possible activity for Sarah. Check it out. It might be a fun way to explore the candidates and the issues with your kids.
It selected a candidate for me — the one I’d already decided to vote for. I certainly wouldn’t base my decision on an on-line questionnaire, even though this one seems better than most. But I’ll take it as an auspicious sign.
Have a good day!
