Have a holly jolly…snow day! Maisy thought the snow was the perfect birthday present. How cool is that? My mom comes in and we get snow! I’m not going to count the snow we had a few weeks ago that lasted a few hours. This is our first real snow this season, quite late too, but at least it’s here. So, after a breakfast of gingerbread eggnog French toast we geared up and headed over to the sledding hill.
Grandma was having a lot of fun (and wearing her newly knitted scarf and hat.) We sledded, snowboarded and ate snow.
Coming back up the hill is work.
Making snow angels.
We made monster snowballs (just like in the cartoons, start at the top of the hill and let it roll down.)
Here’s Joel with his, it was so big we eventually couldn’t roll it anymore.
Here’s Grace’s expression when she saw the […]

We had a great Thanksgiving Day at our friend Krista’s house. We were joined by another lady from our HS group and her daughter, so we had 7 kids and 5 adults in the house. It was Krista’s first time cooking Thanksgiving dinner and she did great! We had chicken, sausage, stuffing, green beans, corn, potatoes, pecan and pumpkin pie and great conversation. Hannah found a computer and got onto webkinz and ‘did her account’ for awhile. Krista’s son Elliott made a paper titanic and we watched it sink in the backyard, it went down just like in the movie too (what HS’ers will do!) We watched some TV, ate and talked. I think we’ll invade someone’s house every year that doesn’t have family in town, it was fun.
Today we started on our Thanksgiving meal with my mom (she came in at 2:15pm) We had turkey, mac and cheese, stuffing, […]

Everything you’ve ever wanted to know about Denver!
June 1858, GOLD! Gold is discovered in the South Platte River near Cherry creek. It is said that gold nuggets line the streets and waters and are just waiting to be picked up to make a man a fortune!
November 22, 1858 Denver City Town Company is founded by the William H. Larimer party from Leavenworth, Kansas Territory. Wanting to be Grand Pooba of the New Denver City, Larimer laid out street plats. Miners beware: grub stakes and land tracts are being offered up in Poker games. Be careful or you may end up with no stake and no home! Larimer was instrumental in the formation of the Colorado territory and making Denver the Capitol of that seat. He was expected to be Gov., but President Lincoln gave the seat to William Gilpin of Missouri. Larimer’s city was across the creek from the […]

last night. I put up my mis-matched garland and lights in the basement, my snowmen on the mantel and my nativity sets in the front room. Oh, and the one set that I thought I lost (I did lose some of them) I found!
As I was putting them up the girls were singing, ‘Mary had a baby, oh my Lord, Mary had a baby in town’. Hannah was singing too and then said, ‘Did Mary have her baby in a mall or in a town?’ Um…in a town, well outside of town anyway, but definitely not in a mall!

Thanks to friends who encouraged me to put up my Live well, laugh often, love much stickers on my wall (I thought they were all one sticker, but each letter is an individual sticker, yikes!) I did that this morning.
The dollar store has these cool wall stickers, I put up a plumb line and got to work, it’s pretty good. The frames will have up close pics of the kids once I get my new camera back. I love the leaves too, the other wall (this one used to be full of kid’s art) will have new cork squares across it and the kids’ art hung up again. I got my backdrop for Christmas pics and some snowflakes to hang, the girls are wearing blue or black dresses this year. Again as soon as I have my new camera in my hot little hands I’ll be snapping away!

Well, history was made last night and the people spoke. Now, if it wasn’t you that spoke (like me) for Obama, take heart. Democrats have had to live with Bush for 8 years; it’s only fair that Republicans live under a Democrat. But, we as Republicans have an awesome opportunity here and that is….we can be nicer to Obama than the Dem’s have been to Bush.
Yes, we can. We can pray for him and as long as he doesn’t do anything against our beliefs (insert your beliefs here), we can support him, we can put God first, country second and ourselves last. Hopefully he will surround himself with smart, knowledgeable people who can help us get out of a war and a bad economy without imposing more government on us.
We have a really nice document that starts out like this:
We the people of the United States, in order to […]

It took me all of 5 minutes to vote at our rec center. Half of Colorado mailed in or did early voting, so I thought the polls would be light, but my goodness! We waited longer in line to vote at the last election and that wasn’t a Presidential one. You could vote paper or electronically and everything was working smoothly when I went at 8:20am.
Subconsciously I dressed all in red today, I didn’t mean too, but I guess everyone can tell by looking at me who I voted for!
Just a reminder that no matter who wins the Bible tells us to pray for our leaders:
1 Timothy 2
1 I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone— 2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 3 This is good, […]

Today (because I know I want to do a day trip next week and ‘in structure there is freedom’) we chunked a lot of subjects. Bethany chunked 3 maths, 5 histories, and 5 literatures. Joel chunked 5 maths and did some history, grammar and writing. Grace chunked 3 maths, 5 phonics and 3 grammars. What does that mean; it just means that things that go together in a unit can be done all at once because their objectives are the same. Tomorrow Joel will finish off his grammar unit and science unit, Bethany will finish off a science unit and Grace will finish off a history and science unit. This will free us up next week to go on our field trip, have Monday off and just have a nice week. We can still learn, but we won’t have to ‘do’ as much paperwork for the week.
We covered some […]

That’s how long we were at the docs this morning for Grace. But, after 5 hours, we got to go home. No hospital stay this time. Yesterday she had 4 breathing treatments and still blew a 50 on her meter. This morning she woke up, threw up, and blew a 30, I knew it was time to go in. The albuterol wasn’t fixing the problem. At the docs office her oxygen sat. was 80%, so they did 2 more treatments, oxygen and a does of steroids. Her oxygen went up to 85% by the time they sent us for an x-ray, 1 more breathing treatment and a dose of steroid and 4 prescriptions later…..she has an early pneumonia. So she’s on 3 hours nebulizer treatments over the weekend, a steroid and an antibiotic. Hopefully by Monday we’ll have knocked the pneumonia down and just be dealing with some leftover breathing […]

Here’s a CBS story about Winter that aired yesterday. I think even though Grace wanted to see whales and help whales, meeting Winter made her like dolphins too. She still wants to be a marine biologist with a minor in whales, but she also wants to work with Winter. When we got back from FL she even cut the tail off of one of her toy dolphins and now it’s Winter!

Kathy wanted some pics of old things or thing-a-ma-bob type stuff. See here for her post. So here are my submissions.
This is a toy from the late 40’s.
You haul Woody the woodpecker up to the top and he pecks his way down. This was James’ dad’s toy when he was a kid. My kids still like to play with it too (but they don’t know who Woody is.)
Next up is an early 80’s appliance that Grandma Carberry swears works, but I’m not ever going to use it (I’ll keep it under the cabinet though.)
I turned the top cover around so you can’t see what it says this item is.
Lastly, a genuine metal Hoover vacuum from the late 30’s.
Again Grandma Carberry swears it worked the last time she plugged it in, but the belt is held on with panty hose (also probably from the 30’s) so I’m not […]

So, head over to K12’s site for some lessons arranged by grade level. Or visit the Constitution center’s site that has lots of cool activities (including a quiz.) Also check out BRI’s site for some info.
Ask questions like: What is the constitution? Why is it important? How can people make changes to the constitution? What amendments to the constitution do I think are the best ones? How does it help us govern our country?
If you don’t know anything about the US constitution take the quiz and there is also a quick fact guide about it.

Today, September 11th, is Patriot day. Remember if you have a flag on a mast lower it to half-staff.
We planted 7 flags this morning in our front yard.

From Kung-fu panda (and previously by Alice Morse Earle and Eleanor Roosevelt.)
Full quote often reads: “The clock is running. Make the most of today. Time waits for no man. Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That’s why it is called the present.”
I found this one too on the web:
“Yesterday is a canceled check; tomorrow is a promissory note; today is the only cash you have - so spend it wisely”

First – James got to fly over the hot-air balloons yesterday for his flying lesson. Also he won’t have one this week because of the DNC. Centennial airport is locked up tight and VFR pilot’s don’t have to file a flight plan (but they want everyone flying out or in this week to file a flight plan) so he’ll have to wait till next week to get another lesson. Joel got to help put up and take down 4 balloons this morning, including the energizer bunny. We got there too late to see that, but we did see the balloons coming down. He was also security on 2 balloons, so he got to say ‘M’am you’re too close to the balloon, please step away.’
After church we decided to head downtown for the pre-convention and just see what was up.
A green festival and peace protests (aren’t the words peace/protest […]

Ok, goats have to be milked. 15 goats really want to be milked after traveling from Idaho. So we hauled out the milking station and put it up in the front yard and milked those goats.
I ran inside and told my HS board that I had goats in my front yard and if anyone had any kefir, they could trade it for goat milk. I knew Kelly would show up….and she did! Noah got to milk the last goat, Kelly goat milk (goat milk……got milk….) and Tim goat, I mean got, kefir grains.
So everyone wins. My kids were just fighting over the teats to milk the goats, 3 girls + 2 teats = someone’s unhappy.
Finally all the girls got to milk the goats, we got to hold the new baby (Seth, 4 ½ mos. old) and we got to visit for a bit before they had to […]

Do you like this page design better?
What’s that?
Oh, the font is too small?
Yes, I know, but I can’t fix it…so hold down the ctrl key and move your mouse wheel up (or down) and the font will get bigger on the page. I’d really like for it to be bigger, but I haven’t been able to do it yet.

It’s so cool,
to be back to school,
where mama rules,
and you have all the tools,
to learn and be free,
and stay home with your family!
Oh…..the school room is clean and dusted, books are back on shelves, and the smell of dry eraser is in the air! Technically Joel and Bethany started their new grade level in June, Grace started today though. They have a new thing on the list of school stuff: languages. Bethany and Grace have French, Joel has Latin. Pretty cool that it comes with our curriculum this year. Joel did history, math, literature and computer. Bethany did math, literature, spelling, grammar and writing. Grace did phonics, math, literature and computer. Hannah stuck circle stickers on paper and drew tiny circles all over the place. She found her new bags of stuff hanging up by her desk. I found a hat rack and some really cute woven bags at the […]

Budding philanthropist makes splash for a tailless dolphin
The Denver Post
Grace Carberry, 6, meets Winter the dolphin and Clearwater Marine Aquarium CEO David Yates. Grace sold two paintings on eBay and raised $45 for the 2-year-old dolphin, fitted with a prosthetic tail two years ago. A 6-year-old girl from Highlands Ranch made a visit to an aquarium in Clearwater, Fla., on Friday to drop off $45 she had raised for a dolphin that lost its tail two years ago.
Grace Carberry painted marine-life portraits and sold two of them on eBay to raise money for Winter, a 2-year-old dolphin, said Jeni Hatter, a spokeswoman with the Clearwater Marine Aquarium.
“It’s just the thought behind it,” Hatter said. “And to be that young of age and already want to give back like that — that’s amazing. She could have just sold the paintings on eBay and kept the money for […]

Our internet is off and on; I can’t get my pics off Bethany’s computer, so I thought I’d do a quick update for now.
Sunday
We went and saw the B-25 H Mitchell bomber at Centennial airport. If you’re in Denver, it will be here until September. They have free tours Fri-Sun and flights those days too ($325 a pop!) This B-25 H is the ONLY flying one around. Remember when we saw the B-17; it was 1 of 10 still flying. Well, this one, the Barbie 3, is the last B-25 H flying. This particular one flew stateside during the war and was then used for experimental landing gear. One of the cool things about seeing these old planes up close is talking to the pilots and crew. They are in their 80’s and they have stories to tell. The crew chief told us that the B-25 H was the […]
