It SNOWED!
Well, maybe not quite, but given where I am and that it’s only December 1st, this counts!
of course it will be gone in a hour.

Thirty posts in thirty days
Can be done in many ways;
I wrote nearly 40 posts
But they covered twenty-eight days at most. (which means I didn’t succeed at NaBloPoMo)
In some of the posts, I wrote about
the things we do when we are out;
Other posts had special things
like my father and his flings.
And there was that election
and who might get our school board selection;
And digging through my father’s past
I found some pictures that did last.
And there were a few posts that barely count
because the flow of words did not mount;
But now that we are at the end
I have some closing thoughts to send.
I did enjoy the weekly thankful posts
but the structure required makes them toast;
I did not tap my writing prompts dry
but to keep posting at this rate I will not try.
I have two very busy weeks coming up between my chorus performing (I’m an ELF working in Santa’s mail room!) and three […]

For the BEST homeschooling conference around.
I’ve been going up to Chicago for this conference for about 5 years, it is absolutely the best conference for the entire family to go to.
Registration information will be available after the first of the year, but the 2009 dates are March 5-7, and right now you can see what last year’s conference offered.

For parts one, two, and three, follow the links.
I am thankful ….
1. For my family and that we will be together for this day to enjoy each other and share in some wonderful food that I was able to prepare (with much help.)
2. For my son, that he can reach out and talk to us (in one form or another) when he needs to connect, but is strong and capable on his own.
3. For my daughter, who can rise above herself and show compassion when I least expect it.
4. That I will NOT be getting up in the weee hours of tomorrow morning to go shopping. Our Thanksgiving traditions cover the entire weekend, and movies and baking cookies figure much higher than going shopping.
5. For my husband. Without whom my life would not be complete.
I hope this Thanksgiving has a moment for you and yours to focus on what is […]

And Boy has only about a week and a half of classes left before finals and the end of the semester, so needless to say, before coming home tonight, his profs went heavy on the assignments and tests. He had two papers due (philosophy on Monday and his freshman seminar on Tuesday), two tests (physics on Monday and calculus on Tuesday), and a newspaper meeting where he got his last assignment for the semester. About the only subject he doesn’t seem to have had “something” was economics.
And with all that coming up, he spent most of last week playing and hanging out with his friends. So that when he called late Saturday to talk and mentioned everything he had coming up, Hubby and I were a little concerned.
Sometimes I think that with cellphones and the internet we are much more exposed to what’s going on with him - or […]

or the effect of homeschooling on the parent who is guiding the child…
According to this article
US elected officials scored abysmally on a test measuring their civic knowledge, with an average grade of just 44 percent, the group that organized the exam said Thursday.
Ordinary citizens did not fare much better, scoring just 49 percent correct on the 33 exam questions compiled by the Intercollegiate Studies Institute (ISI).
So I went to take the quiz.
Out of 33 questions I got 3 wrong, or 90.91%
So, homeschooling has been success in educating myself. (Of course, I’ve covered US history about 3 times in the last 10 years and Boy studied economics and government just a couple of years ago.)
Of the three questions I got wrong…hmm, maybe I’ll put a fold here, so you can take the quiz without […]

yeah, right.
You know, I’d love not to feel like such a minority pov, but I really don’t see religion going away any time soon. In fact, I’ve said before that I have a problem with organized atheists because they seem just a bad in so many ways.
“Atheists can act very much like Christian fundamentalists from time to time,” said James Webb
But it looks like more of my “fellow athiests” are feeling the need to organize and speak up.
I wish them luck at it. I think it’s great to have it more out there for people to realize that it’s not that “unusual” or that it doesn’t mean that I might not still have standards.
The new ad campaigns and other public-relations efforts are designed to raise comfort levels about atheism by making the point that nonbelievers are “just as ethical and moral as anyone else,” said Lori Lipman Brown, who lobbies […]

I started this post yesterday morning, but with dealing with our dog, I ran short on time. I expected to be back home before midnight, so I just saved it to come back to.
Ha, we weren’t home until after 1 AM. Losing my window of opportunity to get “something” posted yesterday.
oh well, here’s what I had written - pretty short, but I’ll leave it and then continue…
Girl and I are running out to Indy in about 15 mins and won’t be back until late, so I thought I’d trot out a quick post. She’s going to a rock concert with her bestest friend -Papa Roach, Seether, and StrainD.
Bestest friend’s Dad works for the facility where the concert is happening, so he is getting them in free (possible back stage passes I hear) and promising to not let the girls out of his sight.
While she does that, I’m going to shop […]

Just a quick link before I run out the door.
I enjoy reading Milton Gaither’s blog about homeschooling, and he has a published article, that looks interesting, about the current population of homeschoolers (I’m only on page 7, so LOOKS is the operative word.)
I’ll read it completely when I get back, but I enjoy someone writing (and getting published) without HSLDA’s oversight.

Hmm, I’ll get to the gory parts first.
Yep, I’ve seen Twilight. The girls and I went to the midnight showing (the 12:02 show to be exact) last night. It was a MOB scene. Some of our homeschool friends went in prom dresses and suits (they were in the 12:01 show) and we got to hear the comments of the people standing near us in line as they were noticed. Surprisingly, there weren’t many and most were matter of fact.
We got there at 11 PM with our tickets in hand, or so I thought. I had purchased them last weekend when we went to see Eagle Eye and the girl had put the tickets and my receipt in an envelope which I stuck in my purse. When I opened the envelope and gave them to the ticket taker, he only found 2 tickets. Luckily my receipt clearly showed three tickets, so […]

The worst thing about missing yesterday is that I have a pile of thoughts for posts and trying to find the time to write, didn’t happen.
And that’s not counting the clippings that have been building up on my desk of things that I’ve seen in the news that seem interesting.
Oh well, I’ll leave you teased about that - though I will mention that the Indiana Court of Appeals upheld that these plates are legal without any extra charges. A load of BS, if you ask me.
Go back and reread my previous post about how people are asked which one they want. Suggestive anyone?
Anyway, I should make this a little more “homeschool” oriented since that’s what we do here - yeah, right - and tell you that you didn’t hear about last week’s bio lab because it was on Veteran’s Day and since the ps was off, I figured on taking […]

I missed a day.
I was trying to informally do NaBloPoMo to see if I could do it. But I didn’t count on what a weekend of cleaning out those boxes and dealing with Dater’s birthday; followed by organized bio lab and then hosting bookgroup (including the baking for it) yesterday, would do to me.
Last night I cleaned up….and crashed.
Oh well.
Original post by Meg
I never expected to get very many votes.
Thank you to everyone! and remember that the voting continues…

I’d have to say that dealing with those boxes definitely put me into another world with dealing with anything else (and writing anything here - probably bored most of your to tears, huh?)
Oh well, I now have a different view of my father in some ways. I just wish he was around to ask.
I did write my uncle an email asking some questions, but he hasn’t gotten back to me. I’m not sure if he’s not home/not checking email regularly or if his email didn’t recognize my email address and marked it spam (I’m not sure I’ve ever sent him an email - I have it from emails of my cousins when they have sent something out to a bunch of family) or if he’s delaying answering because of all the issues that that time period brings up. Well, I tried.
And JoVE, most of Dad’s unpublished stuff is his […]

I’ve finished my first pass through all of Dad’s stuff…
and I’ve cut it in about half. There’s still more thinning to be done, but it’s a start.
Original post by Meg
I just was discussing my Dad’s stuff that I was going through.
I’ve been continuing to dig into the boxes, and the surprises haven’t stopped. I’m not going to drag it out now (Dater is planning a b-day party with her soccer friends - here, tomorrow - so I’m trying to finish getting the boxes dealt with so I can remove them from my livingroom. )
But I’m now found piles more pictures going back to ‘58, Dad’s ex’s Dear John letters - yes, there’s two letters. She did it twice. The Christmas cards that Mom received before her first husband died (may the year he died? I’m not sure of that date.) Dad’s discharge records from the AF….,
And piles and piles of slides and negatives that unless my sister’s have a desire to have, I’m trashing unseen. There’s too much to try to go through them and save them.
Right now I’m […]

Have you ever used it?
I did the other day when my chorus was meeting at some church an hour away and we weren’t sure of anything but the name of the place. I wanted to see what it looked like, so it would be easier to find.
Street View was awkward to use at first, but once I felt like I got the hang of it, it was fun.
Anyway, Hubby just clipped an article about some artists using the Street View cameras to create some (performance art, I suppose) scenes for Google and I thought it was neat.
Here’s a touch of some of the scenes they set up:

Well, it took me nearly 3 hours to go through one box labeled “Mementos.” That leaves me with about another dozen to go…
One of the things I’ve been finding as I go through all of the boxes is picture after picture. Different friends have been suggesting that I should scrapbook all the pictures, or scan then into the computer. Neither project really enthuses me because of the scale involved.
OTH, after 3 hours of looking at things my father collected and kept, I’m ready to share some things. Be warned, I’m posting most of this here because my mil and Boy both read here and they will appreciate some of this (but probably not the same). For anyone else, I recommend a quick scan through if it interests you. (btw, I’m actually posting pictures of me…from many, many years ago.)

I guess I’d better see what I can find in those boxes. If I disappear, assume they brought something toxic in them……

So, I split this over two posts because I was having runnith of the mouth and needed to take a break. If by some chance you missed the first one, go back and catch up.
Anyway, so the clinic in San Antonio couldn’t tell me why they weren’t going to be a PPO for us, but they would take my credit card over the phone and all things considered it made sense to go ahead and do that and clean up the mess afterwards. (Not something we can do for a treatment, but we can handle a basic new patient appointment.)
So, the kids finished the lab and most of them left. A half -dozen of the kids are all doing Explore Engineering at the local collage and when that happens they stay here and hang out. Usually at least one of the other moms stays and we all split a […]

With two cats in the yard,
Life used to be so hard,
Now everything is easy ’cause of you.
I started off calling this post “A Week in Review” and then I was going to modify it to: “A Week in Review at Our House” (since otherwise you’ll think it’s about politics) and then the song started going around in my head.
and well, song lyrics are so much more fun. If you open a new tab from the link in the lyrics, you can listen to the music in the background while you read here. Go ahead, I’ll wait. (I think you do need Quicktime.) Do make sure your volume is turned on.
So, got the music going?
It’s been fun making a point to comment on the blogs I read this week. I think I wasn’t clear on what I was doing when I made the post last weekend. While I really […]

Both Mama at the Outer Edge of Normal and then Piseco at Mind Games have honored me with:
And all I can say is Thank you and ditto on many of the other names they mentioned. Rather than renaming those same people, I thought I’d pass it on to some others.
First we have Doc - She can get to some people (okay, maybe I should have said all idiots) but I have always looked up to her. She rarely says something that hasn’t been thought out and considered. She is wonderful about extending a helping hand to people, which is certainly something that the world needs more of.
Then we have Jane - In many ways when I interact with Jane, I fall into some of the patterns of the interactions I have with my older sisters. I guess I’d have to say that in some ways she reminds me of them. […]
