1. Natalie and I went to see High School Musical 3: Senior Year Saturday night - and loved it!
2. The Seahawks’ season is a constant source of depression. You may wonder why I keep watching every game. I’m nothing if not loyal.
3. I can’t believe it’s time to start working on the Christmas program for church already! I’m singing in the choir at our new church, and we’re doing some fun music - Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir style.
4. I’m very. very. angry at NBC for cancelling My Own Worst Enemy.
5. Life is one of the best shows on television right now. Are you watching it?
6. A woman came to look at our house today. First person interested in months. She seemed very interested, but we’ll see. If she is, we have no idea where we would move to - right now there aren’t any 4-bedroom houses available in our […]

It’s another birthday weekend for us. Josiah, our youngest, turns 7 tomorrow. I’ve searched through my archives, and I’ve never written his birth story. If you’re not interested in that sort of thing, scroll down for the links.
After I had Jonathan, Kevin was ready to be done having babies. Jonathan’s birth was traumatic for me, traumatic for Kevin afterward because of the complications, and he just felt done. I, however, felt like I missed a bunch of Jonathan’s newborn experiences because I was so sick with the epidural headache. I wanted one more. So I prayed that God would change my mind, or change Kevin’s. He changed Kevin’s, and one month later, we were expecting number four. Waiting for him to change his mind is why the length of time between the last two is the longest - 26 months. (18 months between Natalie and Noah; 15 months […]

(Kung Fu Panda Two-Pack: Kung Fu Panda & Secrets of the Furious Five was provided to me by Click Communications for the purpose of review.)
Prepare for awesomeness with DreamWorks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda, “a delightful movie that can stand among the very best animated features” (Leonard Maltin, Entertainment Tonight). Jack Black is perfect as the voice of Po, a noodle slurping dreamer who must embrace his true self - fuzzy flaws and all - in order to become the Dragon Warrior. With groundbreaking animation, an all-star cast and high-kicking humor, Kung Fu Panda is “Ultra satisfying entertainment…There’s heart in this movie and that’s the secret ingredient.” ~Richard Corliss, TIME
Jack Black was the perfect actor to voice Po, the overweight Panda who works in his father’s noodle shop. His father inherited the shop from his father, and he expects to hand it down to Po. “Noodles are your destiny.” Po, however, […]

(Tropic Thunder was provided to me by Click Communications for the purpose of this review.)
When three of Hollywood’s biggest stars head into the jungles of Vietnam to shoot a war movie, they have no idea how real things can get. Starring Ben Stiller, Jack Black, and Robert Downey, Jr., Tropic Thunder is the most unexpected and controversial movie of the year.
Yes, I kind of knew what I was getting into when I agreed to review this movie. Mainly, I said “yes” because it’s the sort of movie Kevin finds hilarious. And he did. He thought it was pretty funny, but fizzled out about halfway through - a funny premise that didn’t quite deliver.
Me? Well, I had to kind of tune it out. I knew it was a spoof of war movies, so I expected the over-the-top, silly violence, and the bad language. The violence was silly and unrealistic - that […]

(Shrek the Halls was provided to me by Click Communications for the purpose of this feature.)
The Christmas tree isn’t the only thing green in this new holiday classic. Shrek is back and trying to get into the spirit of the season. After promising Fiona and the kids a Christmas they’ll remember, he is forced to take a crash course in the holiday. But just when he thinks he has everything for their quiet family Christmas just right, Donkey, Puss in Boots, Gingy and the rest of the gang decide to crash the party. Shrek the Halls is the greatest holiday tale that’s never been told…until now.
I’m not sure if I would call this a new holiday classic. The kids enjoyed it - and have watched it a couple times already - but it doesn’t rank up there with A Charlie Brown Christmas or Rudolph. It has the typical potty-humor that […]

(Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was provided to me by Click Communications for the purpose of review.)
Steven Spielberg and George Lucas bring you the greatest adventure of all time in a film packed with “sensational, awe-inspiring spectacles” (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times). Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull finds Indy (Harrison Ford) trying to outrace a brilliant and beautiful agent (Cate Blanchett) for the mystical, all-powerful crystal skull of Akator in a quest that is filled with “spectacular fun” (Claudia Puig, USA Today). Teaming up with a rebellious young biker (Shia LaBeouf) and his spirited original love Marion (Karen Allen), Indy takes you on an action-packed adventure in the exciting tradition of the classic Indiana Jones movies!
I’ve read some reviews from people who didn’t like Indy 4. I am not one of them. I loved every minute of its over-the-top action, sly humor, and […]

(The Happening was provided to me by Click Communications for the purpose of review.)
Here’s Amazon’s Editorial Review:
You’d expect the end of the world to be no day in the park, but in M. Night Shyamalan’s The Happening, a day in the park is where the end begins. One otherwise peaceful summer morning, New Yorkers strolling in Central Park come to a halt in unison, then begin killing themselves by any means at hand. At a high-rise construction site a few blocks over, it’s raining bodies as workers step off girders into space. And all the while, the city is so quiet you can hear the gentle breeze in the trees. That breeze carries a neurotoxin, and what or who put it there (terrorists?) is a question raised periodically as the film unfolds. But the question that really matters is how and whether anybody in the Middle Atlantic states is going […]

(The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything was provided to me by Big Idea for the purpose of this feature.)
Being a hero is a lot to live up to and for Elliot (Larry the Cucumber), Sedgewick (Mr. Lunt), and George (Pa Grape), working as cabin boys in the local dinner theater’s pirate show looks like it may be as close to heroic as any of them ever get. Back in the 17th century, heir to the throne Prince Alexander has been captured by his evil uncle Robert and his sister Princess Eloise is determined to rescue him. A magical ball bequeathed by Eloise’s father magically transports Elliot, Sedgewick, and George back in time via rowboat in answer to the Princess’s request for heroes, but their timidity, laziness, and lack of self confidence looks like it will prevent the trio from fulfilling their heroic mission. As the three friends struggle with their […]

(Sleeping Beauty: 50th Anniversary Edition was provided to me by Click Communications for the purpose of this feature.)
Awaken your senses to the majesty of Sleeping Beauty, Walt Disney’s classic fairy tale. See more than you’ve ever seen before through the magic of state-of-the-art technology, and experience this groundbreaking film restored beyond its original brilliance, in the way Walt envisioned it - pristine, beautiful, utterly breathtaking. Sleeping Beauty will transform your home into a fantastic world your family will want to experience again and again.
When Natalie was younger, I had recorded Sleeping Beauty off the Disney Channel, but Malificent was just a little too freaky for her. Now, she’s almost past the princess age, but I’m still excited to share this movie with her. The best part of Sleeping Beauty is, of course, the three fairies. This DVD would make a perfect Christmas present for any little princesses in your life.

(Unforgotten: Twenty-Five Years After Willowbrook was provided to me by Special Ops Media for the purpose of this feature.)
“What they did to my sister Patty and to the other children was horrifying. For me, Willowbrook is a perpetual mourning.” ~Kate Meskell
It was a nightmare that shocked not only New York, but all of America. The public outcry about the Willowbrook State School for people with developmental disabilities resulted from Geraldo Rivera’s expose after he had entered Willowbrook with a film crew in 1972, using a stolen key. Unforgotten takes us on a tour of the facilities and interviews residents and their families about the inhumane treatment that shocked our nation.
“The integration of the developmentally disabled into mainstream society; I think that is the triumph of the Willowbrook saga.” ~Geraldo Rivera

(War Dance was provided to me by Special Ops Media for the purpose of this feature.)
The superb documentary War/Dance reveals the redemptive power of music, even in the most horrific places. Focusing on three children in their early teens in war-torn Uganda–stoic Nancy, driven Dominic, and soft-spoken Rose–War/Dance tracks the efforts of the school of a refugee camp called Patongo to compete in Uganda’s countrywide music competition. The contrasts are staggering; in interviews, the children describe their parents being killed by rebel soldiers, then footage of rehearsal shows them joyfully singing and dancing with their classmates. Some of the sequences are harrowing (a scene where Nancy grieves for her murdered father is painful to watch), but without them, we wouldn’t understand how hard-won are the feelings of pride and accomplishment as their school performs for the competition’s judges. The built-in structure of the competition gives this documentary a clear and […]

First, the update on BabyGirl. Last night after dinner she was still limping, so PisecoDad decided to take her to the walk-in clinic just to be safe. They did an x-ray: nothing’s broken, so the doctor said it’s probably just a sprained ankle, considering the way that she was walking (she wouldn’t walk on that foot flat, only on tiptoe).
The funniest part is that the doctor also has a 22-month-old daughter, and she did THE EXACT SAME THING on their backyard slide the night before! So he said he had spent a lot of time watching how his daughter was walking, trying to be sure of that diagnosis, so as soon as he saw BabyGirl he knew it was the same thing. How weird is that?
Anyway, he said there’s nothing much you can do for a toddler with a sprained ankle. Trying to enforce keeping […]

I think I’m recovered from our day-long Silverwood extravaganza. Did I mention that we left at 8:30 am and didn’t return until 10 pm? I’m looking forward to Tuesday, which - in spite of being our fifth day of school - will feel like our first day of school and life will begin to return to normal. Whatever that is.
Lots of exciting things happening in the news lately. Obama gives a darn good speech; McCain announces a surprise VP pick. And me? I’m still ambivalent about the whole thing. I’m musing over a post - that will probably be very long - about the whole presidential thing. Probably sometime this week, if I find the time to get the thoughts out of my head and into some kind of organized format.
But, for now, I promised you links - and do I have a bunch!
